🕯️ TENEBRAE: ENTER INTO THE DARKNESS OF HOLY WEEK 🕯️Miserere mei, Deus — Lord, have mercy on us.
Have you ever experienced a church slowly going dark… candle by candle… until only silence remains?
This is Tenebrae.
Tenebrae is one of the Church’s most powerful and moving liturgies of Holy Week. The word Tenebrae means “darkness.” During this prayer, we listen to Scripture, chant psalms, and—most strikingly—candles are gradually extinguished.
Each candle represents the light of Christ being rejected… abandoned… and seemingly overcome by darkness.
As the light fades:
• We enter into the sorrow of Christ’s Passion
• We remember the betrayal, the suffering, the Cross
• We feel the weight of a world without light
And then… in the darkness… there is silence.
A loud noise (the strepitus) reminds us of the chaos of the Crucifixion—the earth trembling, the veil torn.
But this is not the end.
Because even in the darkness… the Light is not extinguished.
Christ is still there.
✨ Tenebrae invites you to:
• Slow down
• Reflect deeply
• Pray with the Passion of Jesus
• Prepare your heart for Easter
