About this Event
This Holy Week, St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church invites you into something rare and deeply moving.
For the first time in our parish's life, we will offer Tenebrae — an ancient candlelit service whose name means "shadows." Through ten brief reflections tracing the final hours of Jesus' life, candles are extinguished one by one as the sanctuary gradually grows darker.
Throughout the service, a professional string quartet will perform short sacred musical meditations drawn from the string quartets of Joseph Haydn — one of the great masters of the classical tradition. These brief excerpts create space between each reflection to listen, breathe, and absorb the story in a way words alone cannot.
The music will not feel like a concert. It will feel like prayer.
What to expect:
- A printed program guiding you through the service
- A peaceful, candlelit atmosphere
- Approximately 60–70 minutes in length
- No prior church experience necessary
- Childcare available for young children
This service is especially meaningful for those who appreciate classical and sacred music, those seeking a quieter and more contemplative Holy Week experience, and anyone who may not regularly attend church but is drawn to candlelight, silence, and beauty.
Admission is free. All are welcome — no exceptions.
