About this Event
Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto is less a concerto than a delightful act of rebellion. Written for Heinrich Schiff in 1980, it refuses to stay politely within classical borders, wandering instead through a kaleidoscope of styles - baroque pastiche, Viennese charm, jazz inflections, folk dances, even a touch of rock swagger.
Scored for cello and a winds-and-rhythm ensemble (complete with drum set and electric bass), the work unfolds in five vividly contrasting movements, each with its own character and sense of mischief. The solo cello is by turns lyrical, virtuosic, improvisatory, and cheekily theatrical, often stepping outside the expected role of the “serious” concerto protagonist.
At its heart, Gulda’s concerto is a celebration of musical freedom - playful, unpredictable, and irresistibly alive, inviting both performer and audience to abandon expectations and simply enjoy the ride.
