What Is Contra Dance?
Contra dance is a lively, social dance led by a caller, who teaches each dance through an introductory walk-through. Dancers learn by moving through the steps and formations together, following the caller’s cues as the dance unfolds. The figures are related to old-time square dancing, but are usually danced in long-ways sets, with partners facing each other in lines down the hall.
These dances are easy to learn, highly social, and delightfully aerobic. While you’ll dance with a partner, you don’t need to bring one partners change throughout the evening, and all dances are taught.
At Tapestry Folkdance Center, contra dancing draws from a wide range of musical influences. While many contra events feature old-time music similar to bluegrass, Techno Contra offers a fresh feel blending the familiar structure of contra with modern rhythms and energy.
Whether you’re brand new to contra or a seasoned dancer looking for something different, this is a fun, welcoming way to move, connect, and dance late into the evening.
