About this Event
Afri is delighted to welcome secondary school teachers to a practical and engaging training day at Solas Bhríde Centre.
Teaching for Peace: Power, Justice and Global Citizenship is part of The Flame and the Seed, Afri’s peace and justice education programme for secondary schools, in Kildare. Rooted in Global Citizenship Education and inspired by St Brigid’s values, the day supports teachers to explore how peace and justice education can be embedded in classroom practice and school life.
The training focuses on how teachers can empower students to look beyond surface issues to explore deeper questions of power, inequality, history, and responsibility. Teachers will experience participatory and creative activities that are curriculum-friendly and designed to require minimal preparation. The day will also support teachers in cultivating and mentoring Student Peace Ambassadors, enabling young people to lead and inspire peace and justice initiatives within their schools and communities.
What teachers will receive:
- Practical activities and approaches for peace and justice education
- Guidance on supporting and mentoring Student Peace Ambassadors
- Hard copies of Afri resources
- Space for peer exchange and shared learning with other teachers
Important information
This training is free of charge. Lunch will be provided, with vegetarian and vegan options. Teacher substitution is available for a limited number of participants and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
About The Flame and the Seed
The Flame and the Seed is a peace and justice education project for secondary schools, primarily in Kildare. Rooted in Global Citizenship Education and inspired by St Brigid’s values, it draws on her enduring symbols for inspiration: the flame, a commitment to peace, and the seed, a sign of renewal, courage, and care for the earth.
Through interactive workshops and creative learning, students will explore the connections between hunger, violent conflict, forced displacement, and ecological crisis. The project invites young people to ask thoughtful questions, to learn from different perspectives, and to make links between past and present, here in Ireland and globally. Students will also explore hopeful ways forward through human rights, solidarity, ecological sustainability, community resilience, and collective action.
A key part of the project is cultivating Student Peace Ambassadors. Selected students will be supported to lead and inspire peace and justice initiatives in their schools, share learning with their peers and help to embed a culture of peace in everyday school life.
Participating schools can access free student workshops, and Afri will support a selected number of Student Peace Ambassadors and accompanying teachers to take part in the Doolough Famine Walk in Mayo, linking Ireland's history with urgent global justice issues today, and reflecting on what solidarity can look like in practice.
We are deeply grateful to the Brigidine Mission & Ministry Fund for making this work possible.
