A hands-on CPD using drawing and printmaking to explore line, identity and place, with joyful, accessible approaches for all learners.
About this Event

A hands-on Teacher CPD session taking place at October Gallery, designed for primary and secondary teachers and art educators interested in developing students’ confidence in drawing and printmaking as tools for thinking and creative expression.

The session is rooted in the Lineages exhibition, a mixed-material exhibition exploring line across different practices, and uses this as a starting point for investigation. During the workshop, we will consider how artists use line, material, and form to reflect on people, objects, environments, and identity, and how these approaches can enhance accessible creative practice.

The conceptual focus of the session explores line as a tool for close observation and investigation, as well as a way of thinking about mapping, place, heritage, and people through time.

Working together, the workshop will begin with a short collective warm-up, encouraging free movement of line and loosening drawing habits. We will work on large-scale paper, exploring graded and conceptual lines, taking line into 3D forms creating shadow and abstraction. These drawings will then be translated into a simple print-based process using kitchen sink lithography.

Attendees will be able to choose inspiration from objects, places, and photographic source materials, including images representing cities and locations, supporting personal connections to place, heritage, and origin.

The session offers moments of working together and individual exploration, before coming back as a group to reflect on experimental line as a tool for connecting to themes around physical bodies, objects, and environments. Discussion will consider traditional hierarchical ideas, relationships between objects and place, and how drawing and printmaking can support us to express ideas, explore identity, and build confidence through making.

The evening will include light refreshments, time to explore the Lineages exhibition with a focus on practical learning opportunities and opportunities for professional conversation and networking with other teachers and creative practitioners.

We hope you can join us.
