Utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Eating Disorders
Presented by: Emily Prentice, MSW, LMSW | Esperanza Staff Therapist
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based, third-wave cognitive behavioral approach that helps people with eating disorders reach recovery and cultivate vital, meaningful lives by embracing psychological flexibility. Through ACT tools, people come to see their thoughts for what they are and learn to respond more adaptively to them, rather than responding habitually to thoughts that maintain disordered eating. ACT also empowers people to evaluate the “workability” of their behavior, identify what truly matters to them, then practice taking steps towards a value-aligned life while making space for all the struggles that inevitably unfold on their path. This presentation will provide clinicians with ACT knowledge and tools that they can flexibly integrate into their treatment of eating disorders
Objectives:
- Review Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) theory and core processes
- Discuss the application and benefits of ACT in the treatment of eating disorders
- Learn ACT interventions to apply with clients to facilitate cognitive delusion, emotional acceptance, value-aligned behavior, and psychological flexibility
Objectives:
1. Compare and contrast the differences between assessing well-weights for adults and adolescents.
2. Explain the potential impacts of delayed growth and development in adolescents.
3. Identify barriers towards determining well-weights and utilize potential interventions.
