Join us over the opening weekend to celebrate the return of our much-loved central library, Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, and the reopening of Te Ngākau Civic Square. 🥳📚 Be amongst the first to explore the incredible new spaces to read, work, meet, relax and create – our new Makerspaces, galleries, recording studio, Tō Tātou Pōneke (new home for City Archives), Nōku te Ao Capital E's play space, OnTV and Media Lab, rawa (commissioned artwork), the new Reading Room and Ngā Pou Ruahine, our specialist collections including those for Tamariki Children and for Taiohi Youth, and of course all the books!
Take a moment to enjoy the revitalised plaza area of Te Ngākau Civic Square, featuring new landscaping, seating, play areas, and water features.
On offer throughout the weekend will be exhibitions, live jazz, taonga puoro, storytelling and waiata, as well as demos and tours of the new spaces.
The new cafe, Central Ground, will be open on the ground floor from 10am-4pm for food and beverage purchases (the cafe is cashless).
At 10am on Saturday 14 March, the Mayor will formally open Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui outside the building in a brief civic ceremony. A massed choir of 300+ singers will then welcome the first Wellingtonians as they come through the doors.
It might get busy at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui over the opening weekend, so please be patient if there is a queue.
