TDIW Presents: NAYAN (EP release) // Herschel Hoover // Tongue Scraper
NAYAN: A DC Band. taking inspiration from DC punk, classic rock n roll and 80s New Wave.
Band leader Nayan Bhula celebrated 50yrs on planet earth in 2025. Rather than slow down, the longtime DC mainstay is doubling down. Working an uphill battle is nothing new for Nayan…when have you seen a band led by a South Asian guy? Remember any year end best of lists, listing an artist, a rock band, fronted by an Indian dude? It’s hard to be seen as “cool”, when folks say you look like their "Dad's accountant or doctor" (actual after show quote)! But, he's spent decades in the local scene and touring, tearing down those stereotypes of rock n roll. He started with post-punk outfit GIST who released 3 full length albums and toured up and down the East Coast & Canada (even playing CBGB’s). During this time, without any labels wanting to take a chance, he and his bandmates started a small indie label, Red Stapler Records. Taking that DIY DC initiative, its mantra was- DYOT (Do Your Own Thing). The label helped release music not only from GIST, but countless other acts in the DMV, culminating in a local compilation called, “TPS Reports Vol.1.” After GIST, he had a musical shift for a decade with the 8-piece orchestrated indie-folk-rock ensemble The NRIs, who released five EPs. Along the way, he’s shared bills with Rilo Kiley, Lungfish, Moneen, Travis Morrison (Dismemberment Plan), Juliana Hatfield, Laura Stevenson, Biz Markie, Bedmaker, Don Zientara, Khaira Arby, to name a few.
Herschel Hoover Abstract (DC) is the brain bastard of Herschel Hoover, classically trained pianist and staple of the DC experimental scene. In 2019, Herschel co-founded experimental rock band taylorshit.net, best known for playing International Noise Conference in Miami (twice), recording a live album in Baltimore, being thrown out of a punk club in Norfolk for being too loud and producing three well reviewed albums during the pandemic. Joined by an ever-rotating cast of collaborators and noisemakers, Herschel Hoover Abstract blends sounds from drone to noise to classical music to psych rock that will leave the listener simultaneously exasperated, yet exhilarated.
