To kick the year off, the TCP youth program is proud to present two sets of music dedicated to the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. The concert will specifically focus on the early years of the ensemble while they were still in Kansas City, MO, and will feature classics such as One O'Clock Jump and Jumpin' at the Woodside. This is a concert not to be missed and the band will have you up on your feet Jumpin' and Jivin' like it was the 1930's again! The Count Basie Orchestra is considered one of the quintessential big bands in jazz history. Created in 1935 by Count Basie, the band has lasted to this day and has worked with a who's who list of artists over the last 80 years. Due to the longevity of the orchestra, many categorise its history into two disinct periods, the Old Testament (1935-1940s) and the New Testament (1950s onward). The earlier period featured riff based music that was often memorised and heavily featured improvisation. Whereas the later period is considered more orchestrated and refined.
The TCP youth program was formed in 2018 and currently features five different ensembles. Over the course of a year, each ensemble works on multiple projects and has the opportunity to work with an array of guest artists. In the past these have included internationally renowned musicians such as Dick Oatts, Rich DeRosa, and Tanya Darby among others. The program operates as a link between high school and the professional Melbourne music scene and has offered pathways for dozens of students to begin working professionally in Australia.
