This exhibition is a tribute to everyone who has faced life’s challenges and celebrates the strength found in every story of resilience.
About this Event

In this exhibition of new original works of art, contemporary visual artist Cristina Martinez recognizes the brilliance of the human spirit, illuminating the quiet power of individuals and communities who continue to create space for healing. Each painting reflects the ways in which we are all inexplicably connected, reminding us that every individual and collective struggle can lead to profound personal growth.

Martinez’s distinctive style expands in this body of work, capturing her personal journey and an evolving creative language that invites all viewers to find themselves within her work. Each piece reflects themes of solidarity and transformation, portraying the beauty of shared experiences and the healing power of love and connection. The exhibition calls on us to recognize our unique narratives and the power within each of us.

Marking the grand finale of the 2024 American contemporary art calendar, To the Ones Who Remain Unbroken also celebrates the re-launch of TASWIRA Gallery, founded by Avery Barnes, ushering in a new chapter for Seattle’s contemporary art scene. Curated by international art advisor John Wesley, this open-to-the-public exhibition invites everyone to engage with art that unites and uplifts, as TASWIRA reopens with a vision that centers inclusivity and the shared cultural stories of the African diaspora.

About Cristina Martinez

Cristina Martinez, a contemporary visual artist from Tacoma, WA, based in Seattle, initially entered the art world through fashion illustration, later expanding into painting as a form of self-expression and self-love. Her work, deeply rooted in her Black and Mexican heritage, draws from personal experiences and cultural inheritance. Martinez’s “Water Me” series, inspired by her own moments of vulnerability and personal growth, has captured a broad audience, resonating with people around the world.

Her art reminds us that strength isn’t a monolithic ideal but an exploration of beauty found in all forms of existence. This theme of finding beauty in unexpected places is an essential part of her work and her life’s philosophy, encouraging others to do the same.

Curatorial Notes

“The great artists of our time speak to something universal in each of us. To the Ones Who Remain Unbroken invites us to embrace beauty, hope, and resilience as counterforces to the despair of our current times. It’s a space where we’re all invited to find connection, even if we don’t always feel strong. Our ancestors didn’t give up, and now we continue their legacy.”

- John Wesley, TASWIRA Curator/Art Advisor
