Did you know that the Rider-Waite deck we all know and love is not the original tarot deck? And that the history of tarot actually dates back to the early 1400s, when it was just a game and not yet a tool for divination? If you have an interest in tarot and want to understand where it came from and how the meanings evolved over time, this class is for you! Professional Astrologers and Tarot readers, Lori Kaufman and John Selig are going to take you on a new journey through the ancient history of the Tarot.
This course is perfect for all levels! You do NOT need to be a tarot reader, or have any background knowledge to be in this class. This beginner friendly, 6-part series is going to break down the timeline of tarot, how it evolved from a game, into an initiatory tool, and ultimately into the tarot we know today. We’ll examine the complex and fascinating relationship between the Tarot and Christian mysticism; we’ll dive into the psychological aspects of the cards through the lens of Jungian psychology; and we’ll look at the mythological, religious, and occult influences on the earliest Tarot decks.
We are going to break down each of the Major Arcana cards in a way that is simple and easy to understand, but FULL of incredible information! By the end of the 6 weeks, you will be able to recognize the deep symbolism of the Tarot everywhere!
Class 1 will start with general history, some stories of how the cards became what they are today, a brief overview of the systems behind court cards and the minors, the different traditions of color symbolism, and more!
Classes 2-6 will go through each major card individually, discussing stories of the evolution of where each card started, sharing images of their changes throughout the years, and creating a deeper understanding of how they became what they are now. From the Visconti deck to the Rider-Waite, and beyond.
*Note - this course is not necessarily designed to teach you how to read tarot specifically, though it will help you to be a better reader. This course is to deepen your understanding of the history and symbolism of the cards, and to gain perspective on the changes tarot has gone through from the 1400s-now! (We do have another course aimed at learning to read the Rider-Waite style cards, which goes great with this one!)
Workshops will be 6 back to back Tuesdays, in person at Poppets and Potions (formerly The Mindful Nest) in Northside, starting April 15th. Classes will start at 6pm.
*April 15th - May 20th from 6-8(ish)pm.
Workshops will include:
-A guide packed with images, showing the evolution of Tarot as it relates to the history of art, culture, and religion, for each Major card
-A Whatsapp group will be created for the class to communicate during the duration of the program
- All recorded episodes will be posted,so if you miss a class you can get caught up. This means the course can be taken fully online/remotely as well!
-20% off any personal Tarot readings with Lori and/or John during the 6 weeks
-A discount on the first monthly Tarot Night that follows the end of Tarot School
-A certification of completion!
There will also be tea and the chance to meet new friends and add to your spiritual community!
**Option to take the course in person or virtually through recordings! All classes will be posted in the group chat so you can catch up on your own time if you have to miss a week or so. Anyone taking the course can reach out with questions at any time as well!

The cost includes the class and the rights to a few PDFs of decks that are no longer in print that we are going to use, with the rights to the deck you are welcome to get your own decks printed.

For an extra $175 - we will include physical copies of SIX different decks that we think are the most important for this course and in learning tarot’s history to add to your collection! Some of these decks (like the Marseille) are still very popular and used today! PDF’s are NOT included for these decks.
