TAROT ECOSYSTEMS: Worlds Within Cards and the Ecology of Meaning
There’s a Tarot deck for every language of imagination. From dragons, fairies, and unicorns to baseball, circuses, and cities across the globe, from lush, sensory worlds to lands that time forgot, each creates its own ecosystem of meaning.
Step inside the cards with this panel of celebrated creators and authors to explore how setting interacts with subject and scene to shape interpretation in Tarot. When the background speaks, meaning emerges ... and the world of the card becomes inseparable from the reading itself.

(Perfume for the Eyes: A Tarot of Dreams) is a Visual Perfumer, Astrologer, and Divinatory artist who explores the intersection of sensory memory and archetypal narrative. Danielle developed Visual Perfumery—a singular, synesthetic method that translates the architecture of fragrance (top, middle, and base notes) into layered visual landscapes. By treating visual elements as aromatic notes, she evokes the expansive, atmospheric narrative of the archetypal Tarot, allowing each card to unfold as a multisensory experience, a visual perfume. Her self-published deck, Perfume for the Eyes: A Tarot of Dreams, invites readers to use the Tarot as a living memoir, activating intuition through cinematic fragments and collective iconography.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Danielle maintains a monthly residency at Frances May and the Portland Soho House, where she facilitates immersive events and private sessions that bridge the gap between individual practice and collective experience. In 2020, she founded the creative studio Auburn Intuitive to bridge this lifelong engagement in the mantic arts with her technical acuity in the visual spectrum—a skill set honed over a decade spent developing a vibrational fluency in color on a global scale in color design leadership at Nike.
(The Infinite Door Tarot) is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who is most recognized for her sculptural, mystical jewelry creations. She started her jewelry brand in 2008 while working as the painting assistant to Italian artist Francesco Clemente. He became her mentor and one of her favorite tarot card readers. Since 2008, Pamela has collaborated with artists and designers ranging from Spike Jonze to Orville Peck. She is known for her commitment to sustainability and ethical production. She has won numerous awards including the CFDA award for accessories in 2012.
In 2025, Pamela created The Infinite Door Tarot in collaboration with illustrator Krys Maniecki, a stunning 78-card tarot deck and guidebook that reimagines classic archetypes through a surrealist lens.
She is also known for portraying herself in Hulu/Vogue’s The Fund about the Vogue CFDA fashion fund, for which she was awarded runner up. Pamela lives and works in Brooklyn and LA with her partner, Brad, their son, Atticus, and many animals.
(Cirque du Tarot, Soul Cats Tarot, Celestial Unicorn Tarot, Mermaid Tarot) is a tarot deck creator and author who has poured her passion for the cards into an impressive body of work: six published decks and five tarot books that have found their way into the hands of readers around the world.
Hailing from a small bush town in Victoria, Australia, Leeza brings a grounded, heartfelt perspective to everything she creates. For Leeza, creating a tarot deck is like crafting a new world, where the reader is taken on a journey they won't soon forget. Her work has resonated so widely that it's been translated into multiple languages, something she absolutely loves, even if she can't quite read what they say.
(Big Top Tarot) is a digital illustrator who specializes in figure drawing and sequential art. He considers himself a living collage of his interests: manga, the macabre, tabletop games, gender expression–and of course, clowns! Likewise, his work reflects the same layered sensibility. Across his art, he uses the human figure to anchor his exploration of identity, fantasy, and the spaces where beauty and oddity collide. Rather than functioning as a formal exhibition, Ruano approaches his artwork as a collection of souvenirs. This philosophy draws him toward comics, animation, and tarot, where storytelling and accessibility intertwine.
(The Ebony Tarot / Le Tarot Ébène) is a Montreal-based artist, author, and creative director whose work bridges visual art, spirituality, and human psychology. With a background in graphic design and psychosocial intervention, she brings a deeply intuitive and multidisciplinary approach to her creations.
She is the creator of Le Tarot Ébène, a distinctive Afro-Montreal tarot deck that reimagines traditional tarot symbolism through a contemporary, culturally rich lens. The project brings together over 80 artists and features photographs captured mostly by Lissa across Montreal’s natural landscapes with an iPhone Pro. Her work highlights identity, representation, and storytelling, offering a powerful visual language rooted in both personal and collective narratives.
Lissa’s artistic practice is driven by a fascination with human behavior, visual expression, and metaphysical exploration. Her philosophy — “wanting the possible is almost creating it” — reflects her commitment to pushing boundaries and transforming vision into reality.
Following the successful launch of her tarot deck and its growing international presence, Lissa Sévigné continues to expand her influence through exhibitions, speaking engagements, and digital platforms. Her presence at the Los Angeles Festival of Tarot marks an important step in sharing The Ebony Tarot with a broader global audience.
(Taschen's Library of Esoterica series) is a storyteller. In her writing, journalism, filmmaking and creative direction work, she delves into narrative art, music, counterculture, magick and psychedelia.
As an author and editor, Hundley is currently engaged on projects for book publishers Abrams, Phaidon and Rizzoli. Hundley is also creator, author and Series Editor for Taschen Publications multivolume collection, The Library of Esoterica, a book series exploring the visual history of Tarot, Astrology and other esoteric traditions. Hundley has published over a dozen books in the last decade, an acclaimed biography on country rock icon Gram Parsons for DaCapo, a book on music and meditation with the director David Lynch, and an overview of photographs from longtime Michael Jackson photographer Todd Gray and extensive overview of the photography of Dennis Hopper from Taschen Publications,
In her 20+ career as an arts, film and culture journalist, she has interviewed countless iconic actors, directors and musicians or publications such as Vogue, Rolling Stone, NY Times, Mojo and many others. As an editor, Hundley has served as masthead editor for men’s magazine Complex, music mag The Fader, and the UK magazine Dazed and Confused. She has contributed essays on music and culture to several books as well as penning liner notes for numerous record labels.
returns to the Festival of Tarot stage this year as a ceremonial magician, whose work has been inspired by the Tarot since her youth. As an ambassador of the Western Mystery Tradition, the founder and head of faculty of 22 Teachings School of Hermetic Science and Magical Arts, and the officiant of the Arboretum Mysticum Occult Lodge, Naha guides seekers on the path, creates community spaces and sacred circles, and builds bridges between the ancient mystics and modern practitioners.
Naha co-published and wrote the introduction to On the Tarot - The Essays of Court de Gebelin and Comte de Mellet (Ouroboros Press).
Her Tarot School program has certified hundreds of students through her rigorous and technical academia coupled with deep intuitive development and initiation into magical wisdom.
A professional reader of 16 years, she maintains a private clientele of over 1,000 people for whom she reads, using her trusty Kazanlar Tarot deck.
