Hey - glad you are here! Welcome to Tárab Garden, where easts meet wests and memories meet dreams.First of all, what is tárab?
In Arabic, “tárab is … a deep emotional response [to music] that leads to a feeling of connection” (A.J. Racy, musicologist)
And the garden? It's us. Diverse, flourishing, needs loving care.
Here's what's up:
Our Garden Gate opens at 2pm at the iconically laid-back-n-shady Bohemeos in Houston's east end.
We start with short intro workshops in Arabic percussion, bellydance (raqs sharqi), festival costume design, essential oils, flow arts and shekere & maraca-making, sponsored by Casa Cazador, Houston's house of rhythm, while the musical fire starts with open-mic presentations from artists TBA :-)
Across the garden you'll browse and meet artisan vendors of festive fits, henna designs, Arabic art and calligraphy, sculpture, card readings and more. Hungry, thirsty? Hit Bohemeos' kitchen and bar!
As the sun sinks, DJ Purplpitch ignites her Cairo vinyl dance party that's so much fun she's coming back to Tárab Garden for the third time!
She's followed by a showcase spectacle of raqs sharqi and fusion dance choreographed and performed by Queenie de la Rosa and her Casadoras ensemble, including solo guest performances by Houston's Ms. YET, Kari Luna from Boulder, Colorado, and PopnTod from Portland, Oregon. We'll also have the live Arab darbuka percussionists led by Duke Hunter of Casa Cazador holding down and topping off the mix.
We then go to the live-accompaniment set of SW Asia/N Africa and melodic organic house by DJ omniria with the Tárab Garden improv ensemble: Michael Fares on electric Arab oud, Sayeed on percussion, Luis Chacón on guitar, Charlie Burrus on keys, and a special-guest appearance by international classical violin virtuoso Asya Da.
That flows into our closer set by DJ Zoonido, whose deep organic/tribal/folktronic compositions, selections and loops will finish off an unforgettable day!
We're glad you are here and have read this far :)))))
DM anytime for questions or anything you want to discuss!
Music is freedom. Dance is life. Being together brings vision.
Love
Richard, Queenie, Mit (your friendly coproducers)
