TALKING RHYTHM! March 26th 2025 welcomes you all to the Open Mic and we celebrate the evening with wonderful featured poet JANE MCLAUGHLIN along with fabulous voice and guitar duo HOPE AUGUSTUS and SIMON GOODWINJANE MCLAUGHLIN has lived in South East London for many years and has very much enjoyed sharing her work with audiences there on many occasions. Her poem ‘Greenwich Time’ was longlisted in the National Poetry Competition. She has published a full collection of poetry. Her chapbook ‘Ephemeral’ about the climate emergency and the natural world we still treasure was one of the winners of the Dreich Classic Chapbook Competition. Her poems have appeared in many anthologies and magazines and have won several prizes and commendations. She also writes and publishes short stories, one of which has been made into a short film.
SIMON GOODWIN is a Greenwich based jazz blues and folk guitarist and MD. Having played semi professionally for many years, in 2020 he completed a B Mus full time performance degree at LCCM. Now engaged full time in music, Simon divides his playing and arranging time between duos with Hope Augustus and Mieko Kanai, Tyger Tyger, the Mycenae Crew, Manouche Reimagined, the Jazz Knights, and Stella and her Fellas. He also organises the bi- monthly SWOP sessions at Mycenae House, and is a co-convener of the monthly Huskies night at the Orpington Liberal Club, and weekly Blackheath Folk Club at the British Oak. “ Pic from recent Tyger Tyger gig at Toulouse Lautrec follows.
HOPE AUGUSTUS is a singer and theatre actress who has played in several productions celebrating the Jazz age, including; Blues in the night, Ain’t Misbehaving, Ma Raines’s Black Bottom, Rag Time and When Ella Met Marylin.
She was a resident singer at the OXO Tower for five years and has been a guest singer at Pizza on the Park with notable British jazz pianist Jonathan Gee.
On 25th February 2025 she brings her sung and narrated show which tells of the life in the music of the legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday. With a delicate balance of humour and pathos, it tells of her personal and professional struggles, triumphs, and ultimate tragedy.
