About the Speaker
Manuel Vilas, a Spanish writer born in 1962, has achieved notable recognition for his literary works. He is the recipient of prestigious awards such as the 2019 Prix Femina étranger and the 2015 Letters of Aragon Award. Vilas is a versatile writer, exploring various genres including novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction. His works have been widely published and celebrated, and he regularly contributes to esteemed newspapers and literary journals. Vilas has published six novels, including his most recent poetic novel, Ordesa. Other notable books include Nosotros, winner of the 2023 Nadal Award, Los besos, and Alegría, a finalist for the Planeta Award. Vilas' poetry collections have also garnered acclaim, with published titles such as Resurrección and El hundimiento. Translated into over 30 languages, his works, such as the novel Ordesa (2018), have enjoyed international success and critical acclaim.
In this bilingual Spanish and English fireside chat, one of Spain’s most acclaimed poets and writers, Manuel Vilas will share more about his life and his acclaimed works including the recently published Ordesa, a poetic novel. He sits down with Hong Kong-based author Veronica Llorca-Smith to discuss how Ordesa is a meditation on loss and a powerful exploration of a person who is both extraordinary and utterly ordinary — at once singular and representing us all — who transforms a time of crisis into something beautiful and redemptive.
