zerOclassikal presents a premiere of two compositionsTala++
The world premiere of Tala++, an original work for piano and two tablas composed by pianist Steve Tromans. Tala++ takes the interrelation of South Asian classical music and improvisation to a new level of creative entanglement - and the result is something entirely new for both fields of musical expression. The work is in three movements and features Tromans on piano alongside the tabla talents of Mitel Purohit and Denis Kucherov.
A zerOclassikal EXTRAPOLATE commission. EXTRAPOLATE is a new work that originates from the South Asian Classical structure and progresses it further in ways that sometimes challenges its conventional structure or enhances it beyond present perceptions. Whether it explores tonal material or redefines the use of taal or merely steps out of conventions, EXTRAPOLATE will seek to listen to South Asian Classical music in a way it had never been thought of before.
Perseverance
Perseverance explores the vulnerability of hope – in a world embroiled in harsh severity, where beautifying is its only hope to survive it. This three-part development of a new raag by Jonathan Mayer, keeps to the theme of tilak kamod, relooking at the pakards, and amalgamating various taals to create contrapuntal material.
Jonathan Mayer picks this important theme as a way of claiming South Asian classical music is very much a contemporary musical genre, which can be used to create new material about important issues and subjects. “Music should allow you to think about the world around you, not just sound pretty.”
Presented by zerOclassikal
The zerOclassikal project is a platform for emerging musicians from diverse heritages developing ‘British SACC (south Asian contemporary classical)’ musicianship, offering a radical approach by facilitating progressions, experiments and developments in the genre since 2013. The project challenges the conventions of ‘traditional’ labels of south Asian music by making sense of the contemporary that surrounds it.
