Celebrating Gender Expansiveness: Taking Gender-Affirming Care Beyond Treatment of Gender Dysphoria (CE 1.5)
Please plan to login by 11:25 AM to check-in. We will start promptly at 11:30 AM
The target audience for this presentation is clinicians who have a desire to support the gender expansive community through gender affirming psychotherapy. The presentation will be introductory to intermediate in scope, and will be appropriate for those who already work in some way(s) with gender expansive clients but do not specialize in that work, as well as for those who have some introductory knowledge of the population but have not yet felt competent to do this work.

Overview

Treatment of gender expansive clients has become a hot button issue in the past several years. Clinicians are asked to be gatekeepers for identity-affirming and often life-saving medical procedures, and many therapists are, understandably nervous about offering care to this population. But work with trans, nonbinary, and other gender expansive clients can be so rewarding and so meaningful – both for the client and the clinician alike. In addition to addressing gender dysphoria, work with this population should involve celebrations of gender euphoria and the freedom that comes with living authentically in our truth. In this session, we will cover the basics of gender-affirming care from a celebratory and gender-alignment lens.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe 4 barriers to treatment for gender expansive clients
2. Identify 3 ways that clinicians can provide celebratory and affirming experiences for clients BEFORE the intake appointment
3. Name the possible elements of social, physical, medical, and internal transitions in which clients may choose to engage
