Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease; and the gap between men and women's survival continues to widen. Heart disease is the #1 Cause of Death in Women --more women have died from heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.
Harbor House of Rochester will present 'Take Heart, Go Red' on Sunday February 22 in recognition of American Heart Month, with a focus on women's heart health. The event will feature an all-star panel of Rochester women changemakers representing different experiences and perspectives re: women's heart health. Keynote speaker Jennifer Hetsko, Outpatient Coordinator at URMC's Advanced Heart Failure Department is joined by AHA 2025 Woman of Impact nominee Melissa Gleason and Dr. Valentina Kutyifa, Director of Clinical Trials at the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Center of URMC's Women's Heart Program. Sydney Pelusio, award winning runner and heart disease survivor/ patient advocate from Rochester Regional Health will share her compelling story of survival and resilience, and Rochester Institute of Technology's acclaimed computer science team led by Dr. Linwei Wang will explain their groundbreaking work using AI in the management and treatment of heart disease.
Dr. Janice Huang, URMC cardiologist in the Advanced Heart Failure Program will moderate what is certain to be an empowering conversation among these women heart health leaders. A special presentation on “Advancing the Care of Women from Heart Disease through Nursing Research’ will be delivered by Dr. Mary Carey, award-winning Director of URMC's Clinical Nursing Research Center. The program represents a first-of-its-kind-in Rochester colloquium and audience Q&A focusing on contributions to Women's Heart Health by Women.
