About this Event
Visionary artist Taiba Akhuetie presents The Tone: Taiba’s World of Hair, a striking new exhibition that transforms the familiar into the extraordinary. Held at London’s renowned Sarabande Foundation, the four day presentation marks Akhuetie’s most expansive and intimate body of work to date, celebrating hair as sculpture, memory, movement, and cultural language.
Across a series of monumental installations, wearable artworks, moving image, and sculptural pieces created over the years, Akhuetie invites audiences into a world where hair becomes both material and metaphor. Braided forms rise like monuments, suspended works sway softly with breath like movement, and intricate constructions reveal the tenderness and power held within texture, craft, and ritual.
The exhibition will also feature a short film documenting Akhuetie’s process as she creates her most ambitious hand stitched installation to date. Offering a rare insight into the discipline, patience, and craftsmanship behind the work, the film brings audiences closer to the artist’s practice and the intimacy of making.
About Sarabande Foundation
Sarabande was set up by the late designer, Lee Alexander McQueen, who left the majority of his estate to support creative and visionary talent. In addition to providing scholarships and studio space for artists, Sarabande produces a number of events, from the practical to the inspirational.
Sarabande operates from a listed Stable Block conversion in Haggerston and two Grade II listed townhouses in Tottenham, where 30 studios form a creative community with designers and artists from multiple disciplines. Immersed in the hub of East London’s rich creative spirit, Sarabande exudes all that encompasses the creative sphere. The building is home to a plethora of artisans reflecting the multifarious span of Lee’s talent and the variety of craftspeople he worked with his own collections. Amongst others, our tactile artists include sculptors, fashion designers, jewellers, textile designers, painters, performance artists, silversmiths, costume designers, ceramicists, and dancers. Alongside these, Sarabande also houses filmmakers, animators, photographers, digital designers, and visual artists.
