Touch is one of our most important senses. But while we as babies touch everything and put it in our mouths, we unlearn this quickly. Looking and listening are dominant, especially in art. Artist/researcher Marloeke van der Vlugt tries, through her touchable works, to give our tactile sense the attention it deserves. How will you describe the texture, temperature and softness or hardness of the object? How does your body react to the direct physical contact? What does the object want to tell you? And how do you respond?
In this workshop, we will start by sensitising our bodies to explore touching as a manner to ‘read’ the world. Marloeke will present the artwork ‘Tactile Plate/Page’ that you can experience manually – what did you read by slowly gliding your fingers over the surface? The Tactile Page/Plate is inspired by the work Sudan-Paris (1920-1921) created by futurist artist Marinetti. The tactile board was meant to be passed around between members of the audience and experienced via the sense of touch.
The next step will be to share our readings. You are then invited to use the present tactile materials to create a tactile page yourself and continue the storyline.
