About this Event
10.30-11am – Welcome
11am-12.30 – Panel: Abolition and cultural production: an interdisciplinary dialogue from sci-fi to theatre
Drawing on abolitionist activism, and scholarship across Sociology, Theatre Studies and Creative Writing, this panel asks: what kind of role can cultual production play in abolitonist movements? How can the work of abolitionist scholars in other discplines contribute to how we think about abolition in literary studies?
12.30-1.30pm – Lunch
1.30-3pm – Panel: Family abolitionism and literary studies
Despite the omnipresence of family violence in fiction, and marked resurgance of theoretical works exploring family abolition, we have little family abolitionist work in literary studies, with a few scattered exceptions. How can family abolitionism and literary studies speak to each other? And how might both literary studies and family abolitionism, shift our conceptions of what serious political work looks like?
3-4pm – Coffee
4-5.30pm – Panel: Border abolitionism: postcolonial, comparative and global perspectives.
This panel will explore how, in a time of resurgent ethnonationalism and increased militarization of borders, literature represents practices of border crossing and border breaching—where borders can be national, internal, social, or affective. How do these practices shape the very form of literary texts? What imaginative and political horizons do they open?
Panellists include: ally walsh, Phil Crocket Thomas, Sophie Marie Niang, Gracie Mae Bradley, Sita Balani, Alva Gotby, Daniel O'Gorman, Martina Tazzioli, Luke Williams and Shalini Sengupta.
