Symbiosis: The Threshold of the Other
What survives the threshold between bodies, borders, and belief systems?
Opening in Manchester on 5 June 2026, Symbiosis: The Threshold of the Other brings together emerging artists Rocha Dawkins, Rakaya Cohen, and Saint Busari in a multidisciplinary exhibition spanning installation, painting, film, photography, poetry, and live performance.
The exhibition explores the relationship between Black cultural production and the external forces that have historically fed on, shaped, and at times mutually sustained it. Drawing from concepts such as the Plantationocene, ritual and repetition, ecological collapse, and the psychological effects of systemic racism, Symbiosis considers what attaches itself to the psyche — and what is carried from the past into present and future realities.
Through immersive installations, found and recycled materials, experimental film, archival references, and large-scale visual works, the artists construct environments where body, matter, spirituality, and technological systems intersect.
Rather than presenting symbiosis as harmony, the exhibition examines its tensions:
dependency and extraction,
care and domination,
memory and inheritance,
survival and transformation.
Set against a moment of global instability — where political, ecological, and economic systems continue to fracture — Symbiosis invites audiences to reflect on the structures that shape contemporary life and consider how cycles of extraction might be interrupted rather than repeated.
