About this Event

You are warmly invited to our next South West Queer Research Network event, a workshop themed ‘Non-western/Asian Perspectives on Queer Knowledge and Politics’ at the University of Bristol. We are thrilled to welcome Dr Daniel Conway (University of Westminster) and Dr Liang Ge (University of Manchester) to facilitate an interactive session on this critical topic and share their experiences. In light of today’s political climate, this is a timely conversation to have in queer scholarship and queer politics. We look forward to seeing you there and hearing your thoughts!


Date and time: Tuesday 5th May, 12-4pm (1 hour lunch break between)

Location: University of Bristol (room details to follow)

Format: Hybrid (in-person and online options, Teams link to follow)

Dr Daniel Conway (https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/researcher/97q76?section=biography )

Daniel Conway (he/him) is a Reader in Politics and International Relations. Daniel’s work is situated at the intersection of Feminist International Relations, political sociology and queer theory, focusing on the politics of LGBTQ+ rights and activism. His latest book 'The Queer Politics of Pride: Global LGBTQ+ Activism and Homocapitalism' draws from extensive ethnographic fieldwork at Pride events in South Africa, South and East Asia, Cuba and New York. He is committed to real world impacts from his research and have developed an LGBTQ+ Rights Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Toolkit: A Report on Diplomatic Practice in South Africa. This builds on his work with the UK High Commission to South Africa and the GALA Queer Archive to connect grassroots LGBTQ+ activists in South Africa with diplomatic, NGOm funers and policy makers


Dr Liang Ge (https://www.liangge.blog/)

Liang Ge (they/them) is a Lecturer of Digital Sociology at the University of Manchester, where Liang is a member of the Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Life. Liang is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Thomas Coram Research Unit, UCL. Liang is a queer feminist sociologist, and their work lies in the intersection of cultural sociology, digital media and technologies, digital methods, gender, sexuality, youth and East and Southeast Asian popular cultures and creative industries. Liang's research seeks to elucidate how digital media and technologies function as terrains of struggle, and to explore how queerness and feminism in digital cultures act as the very creative drive that generates transgressive and transformative potentials.
