About this Event
Sustainable End of Life Options, with Chicago Environmentalists!
Are you curious about eco-friendlier end of life options in our area, such as green burial, water cremation, memorial forests, and more? Do you want to keep the planet in mind as much in death as you do in life?
If so, you should definitely attend this interactive info session, which will feature Philip Flores Jr. of Cremation by Water, Brooke Benjamin of Inclusive Funeral Care, and Kim Moldofsky of Scrappy Affirmations, who will touch on the benefits of talking about our mortality and how doing so helps people who "live green" ensure that they leave green. The event will also include firsthand accounts from people who have chosen sustainable end of life options for both human and pet family members. They'll cover your biggest questions, including resources available in our area, how the costs compare to standard end of life options, and more!
Don't miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded Chicagoans and add some lightness to a difficult but important topic! Ice cream will be available for purchase, and we will have light snacks as well.
Chicago Environmentalists is a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to change Chicago culture so environmental issues become a social and political priority. They run an online sustainability community where those who care about environmental issues can ask questions and find sustainability resources, events, news, policy updates, and more. They also host a website that serves as the "Green Pages" of Chicagoland, and advocate for environmental legislation.
Philip Flores Jr is Founder of Cremation by Water Group, advancing sustainable, modern end-of-life care for people and pets across Chicagoland. A recognized leader in alkaline hydrolysis, member of CANA, IAOPCC, and NFDA, and a municipal environmental commissioner and cemetery trustee, he bridges public policy, waste systems, and death care infrastructure. Philip advocates that water cremation is not a departure from tradition, but its evolution toward dignity, efficiency, and sustainability.
Brooke Benjamin is a Funeral Director and Celebrant at Inclusive Funeral Care in Ravenswood. She offers a variety of more sustainable alternatives for clients, working with death doulas, hospice providers, body donation centers, and many funeral homes and crematories throughout Chicagoland and worldwide. Inclusive Funeral Care also helps families pre-plan for end of life wishes and can set up Funeral Trusts.
Kim Moldofsky is the Bold Belief Builder at Scrappy Affirmations, where she helps people find meaning, reflect and make art, and navigate transitions right up until the end of life. Known for creative gatherings, she fosters welcoming spaces that invite openness, self-discovery, and the sharing of wisdom. Kim created and produces two storytelling shows: Hot Flashes & Fierce Tales and Let’s Eat Cookies and Talk About Death: Stories of Life and Love.
