This workshop will be capped at 95 participants
Workshop Overview: There are an estimated 53 million family caregivers in the US based on the last National Alliance on Caregiving/AARP report. Caregivers provide a range of care tasks including assisting with personal care, companionship, dementia care, and medical care often with little to no training. Family caregivers are often caring for more than one person in addition to caring for children and working outside the home. While caregivers may find meaning and be able to identify positive aspects of caregiving, it can have a serious impact on their mental and physical health. This workshop will help identify who are caregivers, in particular identifying sandwich generation caregivers, and how to support caregivers in accessing needed resources. It will provide guidance on how to assess caregivers and key clinical techniques for supporting caregivers around multiple family and work demands. Using case studies and discussion, participants will have a chance to formulate clinical perspectives on supporting family caregivers in their multiple roles
Learning Objectives: By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the experience of family caregivers, including those in the sandwich generation, and support caregivers in self-identifying in the role
- Identify and use measures for assessing caregivers' level of burden, impact of multiple care responsibilities, and other commonly used metrics
- Recognize the emotional experience of caregivers and develop strategies for coping
- Use theoretical techniques for providing overall support, addressing family dynamics, and decision-making
This workshop is endorsed by the Oregon Psychological Association (OPA). OPA is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education.
