The SUP Safer Award is for those new to Stand Up Paddleboarding, wanting to gain knowledge and raise their awareness of their personal safety. You will explore and learn to appreciate the potential hazards you might encounter and be prepared to avoid or deal with them.£80 for a whole day’s training (7.5hrs contact time) includes lake launch fee and car parking.
After formal morning training and rescue practice Steve will take you on a short journey where we can discuss site specific hazards and procedures further developing your safe paddling. A BCAB eCertificate is available (a printed copy will be available for an additional fee of £5) if you have met the criteria and would like or need evidence of your attendance on the course.
Having completed the SUP Safer Award you might consider the SUP Sheltered Water Award Water.
To arrange a SUP Safer course at your workplace or club please get in touch ([email protected]). Steve can arrange a bespoke course for any number from 3 to 8 participants.
What you need to know:
1). Equipment.
The nature of these courses means that it is best if you learn and practice the skills with your own craft and equipment. It means we can be specific to your future needs, aspirations and goals. PFDs must be marked CE 50N or ISO 12402. All craft must be watertight, in good condition, clean and dry before launching on the water to avoid the spread of any invasive species carried from other waterways. Steve will ask for the make and model of your board and equipment.
However, if you do not have your own board it is possible to hire a general purpose one from Steve, including paddle and PFD (Buoyancy) for £25, can be paid on the day.
2). Clothing.
A biker understands that we should ‘dress for the slide not the ride’ and in a similar fashion we need to dress for the cold swim not the sunbathed paddle. Steve recommends that all paddlers wear at least a wetsuit (minimum 3mm or better still 5mm) and windproof top or cagoule (cag).
Other suggested personal clothing: Wet boots or shoes, warm mid - layers (rash vest material is great), warm hat and gloves.
Steve also recommends plenty of spare warm clothing for afterwards. Maybe a flask for a hot drink and some high energy snacks. NB There is a fine lakeside cafe, so bring some pennies for a cake and a coffee.
The Small Print:
Please note - Steve needs a minimum of 2 bookings for courses or guided trips to go ahead.
Under 18s are only allowed on Right on Course training when accompanied on the water by their legal guardian.
By booking this event, you give Right on Course and Steve Emberson the right to use any photographs taken on the day for future promotional and marketing purposes. If you do not wish this to happen please advise via email.
