About this Event
Moving in the Spirit is hosting a 7-week open class series for movers of all ages, culminating in a screening of the dance film Five Stories.
Kids, teens, adults, and seniors – all are welcome!
Participants will explore a variety of dance styles in a low-stress, friendly environment.
Weeks 1-6 will cover liturgical, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and West African dance.
Week 7 will feature a screening of Five Stories, a documentary film about the first Black dance studios in Atlanta, produced by Dance Stories ATL.
Our open class series is a place for families and community to move together, have fun, and express their love of dance and music.
No formal dance training is required – just bring an open heart and adventurous spirit.
Dancers can drop in on a week-by-week basis, or purchase a series class pass for discounted rates!
7/9: Liturgical Dance with Chelsi Lester - An exhilarating praise dance class that blends the vibrant energy of hip hop with the expressive technique of jazz. Designed to celebrate faith, uplift your spirit, ignite your passion for dance!
7/16: Jazz Fusion with Leon Von Brown - A fusion class that incorporates elements of jazz, modern, yoga, ballet, and aerobics for a fun and energetic dance experience.
7/23: Beginner Hip Hop with Chris “Twix” Shepard - An all-ages beginner class featuring upbeat music and groove progressions.
7/30: Jazz Fusion with Xavier DeMar - An upbeat, high-energy marriage of classical jazz techniques and diasporic dance.
8/6: Contemporary Hip Hop Fusion with Deborah Chambers - A blend of contemporary dance movement and elements of hip hop, including popping, locking, house, and breaking.
8/13: West African Dance with Giwayen Mata - Set to the live music of the djembe drum orchestra, this class is based on movements and rhythms of the Greater Sene-Gambia region that focus on rites of passage, harvests, and general celebrations.
8/20: Five Stories film screening with Dance Stories ATL - Five Stories is a documentary film about the impact of the first Black dance studio in Atlanta. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dance Stories ATL founders Shoccara Marcus and Tamara Irving, two Howard University alumnae dedicated to preserving the rich history of dance and amplifying the voices of the Black dance community in Atlanta, Georgia.
Individual Class Rates:
- Adults (ages 18+): $20/class
- Children & Seniors: $15/class
- Moving in the Spirit students, families, & alumni: $15
Class Pass* (seven classes per pass):
- General Public: $100 ($14.28 per class)
- Moving in the Spirit students, families, & alumni: $85 ($12.14 per class)
* Students who purchase a Class Pass will receive their pass when they arrive for their first class. Passes will be stamped each subsequent class upon arrival.
Moving in the Spirit cannot refund unused classes.
