About this Event

The Annual Edmund Perry Lecture honors Edmund Perry, who was appointed to Northwestern’s faculty in 1954 and until 1962 was the only full-time faculty member in Religion. He chaired the department during its crucial years of expansion, in which positions were added in several religious traditions. His books include Confessing the Gospel Mark Preached (1957), The Gospel in Dispute: The Relation of Christian Faith to Other Missionary Religions (1958), and A World Theology: The Central Spiritual Reality of Humankind (coauthored, 1991). He had a long-standing interest in Christian-Buddhist dialogue. Named emeritus in 1992, Dr. Perry died in 1998.

The lecture this year will be presented by Maria Heim, George Lyman Crosby 1896 & Stanley Warfield Crosby Professor in Religion at Amherst College.

Professor Maria Heim received her PhD in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard University Press, and her BA in Religion and Philosophy at Reed College. She is a Guggenheim Fellow. Some of her recent books are How to Feel: An Ancient Guide to Minding our Emotions (Princeton, 2025), a translation of the Questions of Milinda (Harvard, 2025), and Words for the Heart: A Treasury of Classical Indian Emotions (Princeton, 2022). She works in Sanskrit and Pali, and is interested in literature, philosophy, and emotion.

The event will be hybrid and guests are welcome to join in-person or virtually. If you would like to connect online please register using the Webinar link poster on our website here. Reception to follow.
