About this Event
London Met Research Conference 2024: Past – Present – Future

Building on the success of the previous four years (1), (2), (3), and (4) we are pleased to announce the fifth annual University-wide research conference. The event will provide a platform for students and staff to come together and showcase their research with the aim of celebrating and sharing our findings and fostering future collaborative and interdisciplinary partnerships.

The conference is organised by the Postgraduate Research Student-Staff Liaison Forum which brings together research students and staff to discuss academic and research community matters in cooperation with the Graduate School, the Research Office. The forum is chaired by Dr Eirini Meimaridou.

What to expect:

Research at London Met is very much concerned with real world issues and thus with our future – a future we hope will be fairer and more inclusive. Our alumna and keynote speaker Dr Lucy Bullivant, author of Masterplanning Futures and a true agent of change, will present her research on ‘livable urbanism’. We will also hear about ‘territorial typologies’ in Stockholm, about children’s architectural needs and dreams in Beirut, and about sub-Saharan sculptures.

Our human science research includes biological security, coronaviruses, anti-cancer applications and vitamin D deficiencies in Black people in Islington. We will hear much about AI applications, for instance on how to prevent unethical and inequitable AI application in forensics and on how AI can support special educational needs and disabilities.

Our Global Diversities and Inequalities Research Centre sponsors research on experiencing the Syrian and Aghan resettlement schemes and on forced migrants accessing (or not accessing) higher education. We will hear about the effect of climate change on gender roles in Zimbabwe and about how Norway stimulates innovation. Psychology papers address the narratives of bystanders of image-based sexual abuse and interventions to address the mental health crisis of children and young people.

Business colleagues will explore our research history in corporate responsibility and governance. We will hear about carbon pricing and about consumer protection in relation to new financial products as well as music business theory and how a ‘born-global’ family firm has negotiated organisational change. Pedagogical research addresses the construct of ‘teaching excellence’, intercultural communication and citizenship in English language teaching, how drawing can support the research process, and lecturer identity in Sri Lanka.

The conference brings together researchers from all schools and, in keeping with the theme, several alumni. We will highlight our Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, for instance about developing specific assistive hardware.

Our tried and tested format features keynotes, 15-minute talks and 3-minute lightning presentations and poster spots. Most papers will be given live, but some will be available as recordings that can be accessed throughout the conference and after. The most engaging and profound papers await prizes in several categories.

The conference takes place in-person over two days, in the Henry Thomas Room (TG-30) at the Holloway Road campus. There will be tea, coffee, and lunch on the day.
