....Among the gently swaying Spanish moss, beneath the arching flyover formation of sandhill cranes, atop a meadow of oak, palm, and the fire-loving lopsided Indian grass, a circle of strings has formed.
Celebrants of the intergenerational Gainesville Old Time Music community gather in a formation of their own to cast resonant instrumental incantations of reverence and camaraderie across one of North America’s highest functioning conservation burial cemeteries. Fiddles, guitars, banjos, singers, dancers, and the fruits of deep-rooted community unite once each season to celebrate our beloved Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery. The vibration of string, wood, and spirit emanates across our wooded sanctuary. This is Strings in the Cemetery. Once every few months, members of the Gainesville Old Time Community will gather at PCCC to perform some of our favorite tunes from the rich catalogue of traditional music, for the enjoyment of all.
“In late March, we will be hosting our first Strings in the Cemetery live music performance, featuring musicians from Gainesville’s long-running Old Time Music scene. Since the 1970’s, Gainesville has had a very active Old Time community. For the unfamiliar, Old Time is a genre of American Traditional Music which stands as a precursor to Bluegrass music. Some of its melodies originated hundreds of years ago, others were written quite recently by its modern adherents, all springing forth from a diverse set of influences within the multicultural tumbler of American Roots music. Reverent, resonant, emotional, and often raucous and reveling, this particular thread of musical tradition is thriving from one generation of enthusiasts to the next in our community. Stay tuned for updates on all upcoming Strings in the Cemetery performances, and other events hosted by our team here at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery.”
