About this Event
Learn how to make your own May Day headdress in this practical workshop where you will be working with natural wheat straw, creating your own hat or head piece inspired by a selection of traditional styles on display.
Minimum age for attendees is twelve years old. During the workshop participants will use natural wheat straw. The work requires manual dexterity and some finger strength. Participants can choose to stand up or sit down during the making processes. The workshop will require the use of scissors and guidance on handling the straw will be offered at the session. Please do not attend if you have wheat allergies as there may be small amounts of dust generated from making with the wheat straw.
Please wear appropriate clothing that you are happy to create in, this includes stout covered footwear (no open-toes or sandals).
This event is part of the programme for LCF’s major new exhibition; Making More Mischief: Folk Costume in Britain, 9 April-22 June, a collaboration with the Museum of British Folklore and generously supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
This event is free to attend and open to all, please register to book your ticket.
Attendees will be welcomed at the front desk at London College of Fashion, East Bank before moving to the workshop room.
Veronica Main has been working with straw since the 1970s. Her work blends making, research and history, but isn’t afraid to move the existing folk lore forward which sometimes gets her into trouble! Since most of her life and she is skilled in working with straw in many ways as well as working with many different types of straw she is regarded as a subject expert. She has travelled around the world seeking out new techniques and stories of these ancient skills so they can be passed on before they die. Now she concentrates on passing on a sharing her research and knowledge through writing, she is an author and book contributor, so these two events for learning provide special opportunities. Everyone who has learned with Veronica knows that the sessions will be lively, wide ranging and intriguing with lots of information and sharing of both knowledge and skills.
