About this Event
Rebetiko, also known as the Greek blues, emerged in Greece around the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. Initially introduced by refugees from Smyrna (now Izmir), the original Oriental-influenced songs mostly spoke about the horrors of the refugee experience: displacement, loneliness, and the longing for loved ones. In the 1920s and 1930s, the genre became strongly associated with the rough nightlife, but from the 1950s and 1960s, rebetiko developed into the popular urban music of the Greek cities.
The duo Yarès, consisting of Fotis Drakopoulos (vocals, accordion) and Nicolas Van Belle (vocals, guitar), mainly focuses on Greek rebetiko music from 1920 to 1950. With a shared interest in the rich Greek musical tradition, they are dedicated to keeping the vibrant heritage left behind by Rebetiko musicians alive.
