About this Event

In this Centre for Arts and Learning 'Stories of Change' event, Professor Claire Penketh who is an expert on disability and ableism in art education, will present her research on how attitudes to disability have changed in school and university education in recent times, and situate an argument for further inclusive adjustments for social innovation in creative educational provision. Clare will be sharing research expertise on how to adjust educational provision for a socially innovative model of disability in the arts and learning, and in wider interdisciplinary cultural contexts.

In addition to arts education and arts practice researchers, this event will be of interest to researchers with creative methods, in the arts, and creative practice research in therapeutic contexts, and all those researching how to apply social models of disability in a range of contexts.

Claire Penketh - Bio

Professor Claire Penketh has an international reputation for interdisciplinary research and practice bringing disability studies to questions regarding value and equity in art education.

Her research can be defined in two strands: the first of these examines the historical relationship between art education and disability, offering a long view of educational, philosophical and social trends in art education and disability; the second advocates for anti-ableist art education, putting insights from critical disability studies to work in contemporary educational settings. Claire is now a Consultant Scholar and Principal Editor of the International Journal of Art and Design Education (IJADE). She is member of the International Society of Education Through Art (InSEA), the Disability Studies, Arts & Education Conference Executive Board and the National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD).
