We are delighted to announce our Still LIfe in Pastel workshop with the fabulous colorist and enthusiastic Jane Hodgson @hodgson8363ps, a memeber of the Pastel Society @pastelsociety.uk . Here is the outline of her class: “Pastel is a wonderfully intuitive medium - colour and marks go together quickly to
make interesting and individual pictures. Experience with other mediums can
inform the use of pastels. Equally, if you’ve never drawn or painted before, you’ll
be surprised how easy it is with pastels. No need for painstaking mixing, or tedious
brush cleaning. And you can draw on many different surfaces from plastic to card
to paper, or canvas or specialist pastel papers.
In this workshop you’ll learn how to pick out the essentials for good composition
and interesting colour balance to make a picture. You’ll make several quick
studies, then a longer one. You can bring your own favourite things to draw (not
forgetting a background, possibly of fabric).
After watching a short demo of exploratory charcoal sketches to “learn” the still
life, you’ll follow suit. Then we’ll embark on the colour drawings - informed by a
demo by myself.
We want to keep the excitement and possibilities going that you felt at the
beginning. To that end it’s important to look at the picture as a whole and keep
stepping back to evaluate it. It may be that you realise that the objects could be
moved to make a better picture. That is all to the good, as it will keep you looking”.
