Steven Cabral: Stars between SpacesMain and Center Galleries

Stars between Spaces, Steven Cabral’s first solo show as a Kingston member, begins with a simple gesture: pouring color onto raw canvas. Working primarily in acrylic alongside crayon, marker, and mixed media, Cabral builds each painting through a process of layering, sanding, scraping, and erasure. The surfaces evolve through negotiation somewhere between accident and intention.
Cabral offers large-scale paintings - 5 feet by 4 feet in some instances, that vibrate with energy and intensity. Cracks, edges, and stains open into shifting fields that suggest hidden worlds. For Cabral, these moments are “stars between spaces”, sites of discovery within the abstract. Compositions balancing organic forms with underlying geometric structures create a tension between fluidity and order. The result is a body of work that reflects how experience accumulates: nothing is fully erased, and each moment shapes what follows.
His work in the Center Gallery considers equanimity to be felt rather than defined. Layers pull you inward, inviting you to drift through a sea of color. Boundaries begin to soften and you may leave unsure of where you start and where you end but as a gentle reminder to just exist and breathe.
Cabral’s paintings invite slow looking and personal interpretation. Rather than offering fixed meaning, they ask: What do you see? What emerges as you remain with the work?
