Join us for the STEAM Café this month! January’s STEAM talk, “Old Bones and New Stories from the Badlands”, will be presented by Ed Welsh, a paleontologist and the education specialist at Badlands National Park. The Badlands of South Dakota was home to the first major fossil discoveries in western North America. These outcrops have provided more than 175 years’ worth of research, documenting past life during one of the most significant climate transitions since the end of the dinosaurs. Ed Welsh (MS Paleo 10), a paleontologist and the education specialist at Badlands National Park (known as “The Bearded Ranger” on social media), has been heavily involved in bringing new park discoveries to light. This presentation will highlight some of the more significant discoveries made in recent years, including new genera and species of fossil mammals, as well as what the future has in store.

What’s the STEAM Café?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Hay Camp Brewing Company, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting have teamed up to create STEAM Café, which will be held at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at Hay Camp. Join us for drinks and enjoy a talk by a member of the Mines family. Collaborative programs, cutting edge research and historical perspectives on everything from gothic literature to the impact of motherhood are just a few cool things that you’ll learn about at these fun gatherings. The STEAM Café is a place to share new ideas, forge new friendships and grow as a community.
