From Repair to Return: Rebuilding a Black and Thriving Central District
About this Event

If you care about who gets to stay in the Central District, who gets to return, and what kind of city Seattle becomes, this is a room you cannot afford to miss.

From Repair to Return: Rebuilding a Black and Thriving Central District
State of Africatown 2026 is a community gathering focused on one urgent goal: ending Black displacement in Seattle’s Central District.
More than 70% of the Black population has been pushed out of the Central District. This event explains how it happened, why it continues, and what it will take to stop it. If you care about Black families keeping their homes, land, and legacy in the Central District, this meeting matters.
You will hear clear facts, history, and data that help you understand displacement and talk about it with confidence. We are joined by Bernadette Atuahene, author of Plunder, who explains how racist housing and public policies took wealth from Black communities and what real repair looks like today.
Africatown and city leaders will share what is being done now and what must happen next. Key decision-makers will be in the room to hear directly from the community.
This gathering is about truth, accountability, and action so Black families can stay and thrive in the Central District.

Features:

  • Keynote speaker, Bernadette Atuahene, author of Plundered: How Racist Policies Undermine Black Homeownership in America
  • Call for Intential Repair and remarks from Elected Officials
  • Honoring of Community Elders
  • Performances, small bites, informal networking and more
