An immersive bedroom party: East Asian young women’s gender identity exploration & empowerment through storytelling and interactive workshop
About this Event

Date and Time: 19/12/2025, full-day event (9am - 6pm, detailed timeline tbc)

Location: SW -1.09, Inigo Room, Somerset House, Strand, London

- Event concept:

We will create a virtual character, Sky, a 17-year-old East Asian young girl inspired to explore her gender identity. By transforming the venue into her bedroom, we aim to curate an immersive bedroom party as hosts and invite audiences to be her friends and join us. During our venue design and decoration, we are going to exhibit artworks on wall and grounds, while applying interactive installations and activities like clay DIY and Hama bead workshops (tbc) to engage the audience, thereby introducing the undiscovered story of East Asian young women's gender identity exploration and empowerment.

- Experience & Participation:

On the day of the event, every audience interested in exploring gender and identity are welcomed as Sky’s friends attending her birthday party — a celebration that marks not just age, but awareness. The room will be filled with visual artworks and personal objects reflecting Sky’s inner world. As a kid who fascinated by crafts, Sky invites everyone to her clay and Hama bead workshop. Participants can create small, handcrafted items, including symbols of identity, memories, and emotions. They can choose to give their creations to Sky as birthday gifts or donate £2 to a charity providing youth support and take their creations back home. This participatory creative process transforms the audience from observers into co-creators, sharing in Sky's journey of gender self-discovery.

- Sky’s background story:

Sky grew up in an ordinary East Asian family. When her parents travelled for work, she was looked after by a neighbour whose gender performance doesn’t belong to traditional gender norms expected by society. As a child, she simply thought they were cool — someone free to be themselves. Years later, through writing and continuous exploration in online tribes & communities, Sky came across new ways of understanding gender that reminded her of that memory. Now, at her age of seventeen, she often asks herself: “Do I want to be called a woman, or just me?” Her bedroom becomes a space for reflection, creation, and becoming.
