Almost a 110 years since the Easter Rising of 1916, the world is still beset with the problems that set this moment into effect.Through these two films we will take a look into the profound optimism and courage of those that sought to free Ireland from the shackles of British imperialism and capitalism, to the cold reality of what revolution means for the working class. The Rubberbandits Guide to 1916 provides a uniquely surreal take on teaching this history from this comedic duo, donned in plastic bag balaclavas and heavily inspired by the Dadaist movement, give you the sharpest social commentary on the background of the Easter Rebellion through the medium of their absurdist comedy. “The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” directed by Ken Loach, 2006, 127 minutes / You might expect a movie about the Irish struggle for independence from the British Empire during the 1920s to be a sweeping historical epic a la Braveheart, but The Wind That Shakes The Barley is instead a heartbreaking miniature portrait of the human impact that the brutal occupation has on the residents of a small County Cork village. Cillian Murphy is superb as Damien O’Donovan, a young medical student who is about to up sticks for London when he witnesses first-hand the savagery of British forces on his neighbors.
