Join us for Choral Evensong followed by the first in our new series of St Olave Lectures, exploring aspects of the history associated with the church.
Today we welcome the botanist Roy Vickery to explore the life of Job Lousley, whose memorial hangs in St Olave Hart Street. Amongst other things, Lousley wrote a fascinating account of the flora growing in the sites of bombed City of London Churches, including St Olave Hart Street.
Job Edward Lousley:
Job Lousley earned a living working in Barclays, initially in south London and later in the City, from the age of 17 until retirement at the age of 60. From his later schooldays until his death he was a tireless and prolific amateur botanist, writing lecturing and serving on the governing bodies of many organisations, including the Botanical Society of the British Isles (now the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland), the London Natural History Society, and the South London Botanical Institute, for all which he served as President
About the Speaker:
Roy Vickery was born in March 1947 in rural west Dorset. From 1965 to 2007 he worked as a botanist at the Natural History Museum, London. He remains a Scientific Associate at the Museum, where he mainly helps with the curation of its lichen collections. He also volunteers in the Cambridge University herbarium, trying to identify 19th century collections from South America. Find out more at this link.
