In 1890s Germany, schooling aims to teach only a sense of clockwork conformity suitable for the industrial revolution. Repeating the same dry verses is mandatory and the wisdom of the past is unquestionable. For Moritz, his rebellious friend Melchior is his lifeline to navigating his confusing dreams of sex and identity. Meanwhile Wendla naively experiments on her own desires with Melchior, unable to get the simple facts of reproduction from her mother. When Moritz fails an exam, the full force of Victorian values irrevocably changes their lives and only some can learn from their parents’ mistakes.
