Put your Hand on Your Heart, Confide in Me, and show me how much you love Kylie!
The evening will be a glittering Kylie-fest hosted by Perth’s dazzling drag diva and nationwide phenomenon, Miss Cara. With live music, games, quizzes and readings from the new anthology, Spinning Around: The Kylie Playlist by authors Patrick Marlborough and Andrea Thompson, we’ll Step Back in Time to reminisce about the Princess of Pop, the songs and the outfits.
And speaking of outfits, it is Halloween, a night for dress-ups. Just sayin’ (there will also be a prize for best outfit so get your Kylie on!)
About the Book:
Kylie Minogue is the musical muse for this sparkling new anthology from Fremantle Press. Twenty-four writers, a third of whom identify as LGBTQIA+, used a Kylie Minogue song as the springboard for a new, original piece of work, covering the genres of crime, memoir, speculative fiction, poetry and science fiction – from Kylie’s 1987 release ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ all the way through to her newest album ‘Tension’.
About the Authors and Presenters:
Miss Cara
Cara is Perth’s dancing, ditsy, dazzling, drag diva! Since her spectacular debut, this campy queen has been a whirlwind force in Western Australia’s drag scene.
Reigning as the 2022 crowned queen at Connections Nightclub and the 2023 crowned queen of The Court Hotel, Cara is the glittering host & dancing showgirl of your dreams.
However Cara is more than your ‘girl’ next door; she’s a nationwide phenomenon! Having toured the country hosting her show Turn Back Time in NSW, VIC & SA she’s left her mark (and glitter) on stages far and wide. Cara’s piercing wit and blaring laugh will bring something special to any event she enters!
Patrick Marlborough
Patrick Marlborough is a neurodivergent nonbinary writer, comedian, journalist, critic and musician based in Walyalup (Fremantle), Whadjuk Boodja. They have been published in VICE, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, The Saturday Paper, Junkee, Noisey, Meanjin, Overland, Crikey, The Lifted Brow, Cordite, Going Down Swinging, The Betoota Advocate, and beloved other. They are a passionate mental health and disability advocate, regularly writing about their experiences with depression, suicide, bipolar, high functioning autism, and OCD. They have lived their whole life in Fremantle and spend their days arguing with their incredibly naughty dog, Buckley.
Andrea Thompson
Andrea Thompson is a music journalist, artist manager and promoter. Born in the north of England in the Swinging Sixties, Andrea has worked through a range of jobs including trades assistant in the north-west of Western Australia, factory worker, teacher and public servant, but her one constant is writing. Whenever the world makes her doubt herself, Andrea writes her way through the uncertainty. Her lived experience influences most aspects of her life, including her creative works. Being an accidental member of one of the smallest and most oppressed minorities in society, Andrea is an activist and campaigner for recognition and equity for trans and gender-diverse people. Her approach to life is to live large in the mainstream, while working to change the world one small step at a time, making it safer and creating equity for LGBTQIA+ people. She largely does this through her great loves of writing and music.
Gillian O'Shaughnessy
Gillian O’Shaughnessy is a journalist, writer, editor and facilitator from Fremantle. She spent 25 years working in News, Current Affairs and Local Radio for the ABC, presenting the Afternoon Show on ABC Perth & WA for a decade. She is an award-winning author of flash fiction. She has won the UK Reflex Press Flash Fiction Award, the WA Love to Read Local Flash Fiction Competition and was selected for the inaugural Fractured Literary Anthology Prize in the United States. Her work has been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, the Bath Flash Fiction Award, the Oxford Flash Fiction Prize and the London Independent Story Award, among others. She has been nominated for two US Pushcart awards. Gillian is a Submissions Editor with the US flash fiction journal, SmokeLong Quarterly and in 2022 she curated Writers Weekend for Perth Festival.
