WHAT'S THE LATE EIGHTIES SPECIAL ABOUT, THEN?
First of all, it's happening on the unusually early-in-the-month slot of Sat 11 May, NOT our traditional third Saturday of the month (due to Komedia being involved in Great Escape shenanigans on our usual weekend). And this month we're going to try something a little bit different, and step outside our usual 1979-1984 comfort zone by focussing our attention on the other end of the decade. On SATURDAY 11th MAY, for only the second time ever, we're throwing a LATE EIGHTIES SPECIAL! Every single track we play will be from 1985-1989. We'll acknowledge what some of our core artists (eg Cure, Sisters, Cramps, Siouxsie, Depeche, Smiths, Bunnymen) were up to in the latter part of the 80s, but more importantly, we'll be giving time to some of the acts who don't normally get much of a look-in. Just few examples, in alphabetical order: 808 State, 10,000 Maniacs, Age Of Chance, Beastie Boys, Big Audio Dynamite, Birdland, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, De La Soul, Dinosaur Jr, Faith No More, Fields Of The Nephilim, Front 242, Fugazi, Gaye Bykers On Acid, The Godfathers, Happy Mondays, The House Of Love, The Housemartins, Husker Du, The Inspiral Carpets, James, Laibach, Loop, Ministry, The Mission, Mudhoney, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Nitzer Ebb, Pet Shop Boys, Pixies, The Pogues, Pop Will Eat Itself, Primal Scream, The Primitives, Public Enemy, REM, Run DMC, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Sonic Youth, The Soup Dragons, Spacemen 3, The Stone Roses, Sugarcubes, That Petrol Emotion, Throwing Muses, The Wedding Present, We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It, The Wonder Stuff, The Young Gods, Zodiac Mindwarp... you're starting to get the idea, and we're sure you can think of others (we're open to suggestions!). So please RSVP to the Facebook event, share it, nag your mates to come along, stick it in your diary, grab yourself a ticket from the Komedia box office, and most importantly of all, come along on the night!
INCLUSIVITY AND EQUALITY
Spellbound is proud to be a friendly and inclusive safe space for all. We take a zero tolerance approach to racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, and bigotry of any kind. This applies both to our club nights and our social media. Any unkind, discriminatory or predatory behaviour is unwelcome here and will result in swift removal from our spaces. We thank you all for respecting this policy, and for helping to make Spellbound the warm and welcoming place that it is.
ARRIVE EARLY!
We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. (Please note that admission on the door is CASH ONLY. There is a cash machine at Tesco on Jubilee St and HSBC at the corner of Bond St and North St.) However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, then ARRIVE EARLY!
CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £4.00, exclusively for Spellbound.
THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT of Cherry Sourz! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for your delicious sugary shot.
YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.
FUTURE EVENTS
We’ll be back on Sat 15 Jun for a normal, non-themed 1979-89 Spellbound and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2024. When buying tickets for future Spellbounds, please bear in mind that some of them may have special themes. Watch our social media @SpellboundClub for announcements.
But for now…
See you on the 11th!
