Whitehawk Neolithic Camp guided walk
The Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure is one of Britain’s earliest monuments. Situated in a commanding position above East Brighton, close to Brighton Racecourse, lies Whitehawk Camp, one of Britain's earliest Stone Age monuments. The site was chosen some 5,650 years ago (c. 3,650 B.C.) as an area for feasting, burial and communing.
A c. 60 minute guided tour of this unique part of Brighton & Hove's heritage will provide an introduction to the early British Neolithic in Sussex, the people, the significance of the Whitehawk enclosure, its layout and the excavations undertaken during the 1920s and 30s. In addition, local artist Simon James will talk about the deep listening that played an important part in those early excavations and how it inspired the Neolithic Cannibals exhibition.
Despite the excavations being well undertaken and incredibly important to our understanding of the period and the site, the director appears to have had a jaundiced view of the people who built and lived at Whitehawk Camp and described them as cannibals living in filthy litter. During the talk we’ll investigate if this was likely to be true and what life was like for these early Brighton residents.
