Epistemic Trust in Psychopathology: Current Findings and Future Directions

We are thrilled to welcome Dr Chloe Campbell from University College London, as this year's guest speaker for Spectrum & RANZCP Victorian Branch's Annual Jo Beatson Lecture.

Chloe will address epistemic trust, which refers to personally significant knowledge communicated by others. Its absence is linked with developmental psychopathology and vulnerability to mental disorder. Evidence is emerging that the development of epistemic trust may underpin effective psychotherapy for those with epistemic mistrust or elevated levels of epistemic credulity.

We are indeed privileged to have Chloe Campbell, international authority on epistemic trust, enlighten us on this clinically important, perhaps revolutionary concept. There will be ample time for audience questions and discussion following the lecture.

About Dr Chloe Campbell: Deputy Director of the Psychoanalysis Unit, Dept of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology, University College London. Her research interests include mentalizing, epistemic trust and attachment theory.

She is series co-editor with Dr Liz Allison of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families/Routledge Best Practice Series.

Dr Campbell was educated at Cambridge, LSE and SOAS. She has a PhD in History and has published a book on the history of eugenic thought on the basis of her doctoral research. She is particularly interested in pursuing the interdisciplinary implications of recent theoretical developments in the area of epistemic trust, culture and psychopathology.

About Associate Professor Josephone Beatson: The Jo Beatson Lecture is held annually in honour of Associate Professor Josephine Beatson’s significant contributions to the field of psychotherapy in Victoria and more broadly across Australia. She is a consultant psychiatrist with more than 35 years’ experience treating people with personality disorders. She has lectured, published and supervised extensively in this field and is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on BPD in Australia. In 2023 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division, as well as awarded the RANZCP citation in 2020, the Vic Branch of the RANZCP Meritorious Service Award in 2017, and three Outstanding Teaching Awards for the University of Melbourne, Master of Psychological Medicine course.
