About this Event
Don’t Miss this rare Public Screening of Late Shift!
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Federal Chief Nursing Officer, Leigh Chapman, and experienced local nurses to explore the realities raised in the film.
Told from the perspective of Floria (Leonie Benesch), a nurse on the ward, Late Shift draws the audience into tender moments of care and into the tension created by the relentless pace that pushes her to the brink. Late Shift is a thriller. A typical short-staffed shift becomes a race against time, testing the limits of Floria and taking the audience along with her for the rollercoaster ride of her shift. For anyone who has wondered what exactly it means to talk about a health care system in crisis, Late Shift answers this brilliantly.
Late Shift has won multiple accolades at film festivals internationally and was Switzerland’s submission to the Oscars for the category of Best International Film for 2026. Volpe’s meticulous research makes for a startlingly honest depiction of what it is like to work as a nurse. “A great deal of care went into figuring out how to tell the story in a way that makes the viewer feel as though they are the nurse, experiencing the intensity firsthand,” Volpe has explained. Of her inspiration for this film, Volpe’s said: “The topic of care has occupied me for many years. I lived with a nurse for a long time and witnessed every day what she experienced at work – the good and the bad – which, above all, had to do with the conditions, which became increasingly challenging. In my opinion, this profession should be one of the most highly regarded and respected in our society. Carers look after us when we are sick and old, when we are at our most vulnerable. They carry an enormous responsibility every day. That‘s why I wanted to make a movie that celebrates this profession.”
Late Shift is a portrait of everyday courage, both an homage to nurses and a rousing call to address the global staffing shortage in the industry. Essential viewing for anyone that cares about their experience of the healthcare system.
This screening is in honour of National Nursing Week and falls on International Nurses' Day. Run time is 92 minutes and the film is in German with English subtitles.
