SPEAKING OF THE DEVIL Saturday 23rd May | 6pm-8pm | Sanctum Mysterium | £20pp
In this talk we're exploring one of the most fascinating figures in Western religious and occult history - the Devil as we know him. We will look at him as a historical question: how did this image evolve, and what shaped it along the way?
We'll be tracing the rich and surprisingly tangled history of diabolical iconography across cultures and centuries, from the horned deities of pre Christian Europe, including Pan, Cernunnos, and the enigmatic Baphomet, through to the figure that emerged in medieval and early modern religious thought. How did these images influence one another? What did scholars, theologians, and occultists make of them? And why does the Devil look the way he does?
We'll also be looking at demonology as a serious scholarly discipline, one with a genuinely remarkable body of literature, and what it can tell us about the societies, fears, and belief systems that produced it.
