During the First World War, the 4th Northern General Hospital was at the Grammar School in Lincoln. the hospital had 1,400 beds and during the course of the war, admissions numbered 45,000. Lincoln (Newport) Cemetery, which was near the hospital, contains 139 First World War burials, almost 90 of them forming a war graves plot. During the Second World War, this plot was extended and most of the 120 burials from this period were made there. The rest of the graves from both wars are scattered throughout the cemetery.

The tour lasts approx. 90 mins and covers about 1000 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground. There is wheelchair access.

Parking is available nearby and on-site facilities including toilets. Please bring water if required.

Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.

Well behaved dogs on a lead are allowed in the cemetery.

Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982)the
