Join us for a screening of Goodbye Julia, 2023. The film highlights the emotional costs of maintaining the veneer of "peace" or normality.
About this Event

The film opens with the death of First Vice President Dr John Garang de Mabior, who led the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, and the rage that erupts in the streets of Khartoum, Sudan. Mona and Julia, two women from radically different social positions, are thrown into proximity within this political climate. Both characters resort to differing modes of deceit to evade the fate of their social positions.
Goodbye Julia world premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard, where it was the first Sudanese director and film to participate in the history of the festival. It went on to win the festival’s Freedom Prize and was later Sudan’s official submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.

Visitors are invited to take part in a discussion about the film following the screening, facilitated by Black Cinema Project. All responses, emotional and critical, are welcome.

The film is in Arabic, with English subtitles.

All tickets purchased through the South London Gallery’s website and/or the South London Gallery’s Eventbrite account are non-refundable.
